The sensor represents the first component in an AE measurement chain and therefore is of particular importance. A subsequent measurement system can only process signals picked up by the AE sensor. Anything that the AE sensor does not pick up is lost for analysis. The preamplifier, either integrated or added externally, maintains the signal to noise ratio and enables the transmission of the sensor output over long cable distances.
